The Inverter technology (DC) is the latest evolution of technology concerning the electro motors of Air Conditioner compressors. An Inverter is used to control the speed of the compressor motor, so as to continuously regulate the temperature.
The DC Inverter units have a variable drive with an adjustable electrical inverter to control the speed of the electromotor, the compressor, and the cooling / heating output. The drive converts the incoming AC current to DC current, and then through a modulation in an electrical inverter, it produces the desired frequency (or speed). The micro-controller can then sample each ambient air temperature reading (from various and adjust the speed (and torque) of the compressor accordingly.
The inverter air conditioning units have increased efficiency in contrast to traditional air conditioners, extending the life of their parts, and the sharp fluctuations are eliminated.
This makes the inverter A/C units much quieter, with significantly lower operating cost, and ultimately less brake downs. The inverter A/C units are generally more expensive than a constant speed A/C, but this is offset by lower energy bills. The Return on Investment (ROI) payback time is approximately two years depending on the usage.
ECM motor = 1-2 years ROI
2-Stage System = 4-5 years ROI
96% Variable System = 10-12 years ROI
For the most efficient system, pair the Inverter A/C with a Variable or Modulating-Speed Furnace. Some of the Variable and Modulating Speed furnaces available are the most intelligent on the market. Though they may cost slightly more upfront, their savings can quickly be realized in saved energy costs within the lifetime of the equipment.
